The Hanafis hold that custody goes to the mother; if mother is not available or unable, hadana rights and responsibilities is transferred from the mother to the mother’s mother, then to the father’s mother, then to the full sisters, then to the uterine sisters, then to the paternal sisters, then to the full sister’s daughter, and so on until it reaches the maternal and paternal aunts.
